 The shiny new Derby Indoor Velodrome is to open in the new year, and this news nearly prompted me to start another rant about Nottingham’s continued neglect of cycling and lack of any facility since the surrender of the Harvey Hadden cycling track to the athletes back in 2003; when something prompted me to actually go and have a look at the current plans for the Harvey Hadden site.

When I arrived, and met old friend Perry the groundsman, it was amid frantic building works; and sure enough there was the sad sight of the old disused, desecrated and moss-covered cycle track, excavated for the athletes’ long-sought-after ‘Holy Grail’ of the mythical eighth running lane. Derby’s new £27.5m velodrome is named ‘Derby Arena’ – but only in the short-term

DERBY’S £27.5 million multi-sports centre has been named the Derby Arena – but only for marketing purposes.

The city council has said that this will now be its name until a sponsor can be found.

The authority has now further clarified that the name “Derby Arena is being used for marketing purposes whilst the sponsorship strategy is being progressed, which will include the opportunity for naming rights to be considered by people”.

The centre, which people also know as the velodrome, is now just months away from completion, as these pictures show.

The futuristic 156,000 sq ft arena is being built next to Pride Park Stadium.
