Gethyn Davies, projects manager at Derby City Council, tells us about overseeing the construction of the multi-use sports arena and velodrome on Pride Park.

MONDAY

My working days are split between the site and Council House.

The arena building is now 99% watertight and 64% complete. The holes in the side of the building that were used to bring in any large pieces of mechanical and electrical equipment are now being sealed up.

This morning I’m at the Council House. It has been in use for 12 months so it’s time to take stock of any defects that have become apparent.

Derby’s velodrome ‘needs more seats’

Derby’s new 5,000-seat velodrome needs a larger capacity, a councillor says
Derby’s 5,000-seat velodrome needs a larger capacity to attract major events, some city councillors say.

Conservative councillor Matthew Holmes said the capacity of the multi-use venue, due to open in November, should be increased to 7,500 to attract performers like Robbie Williams.

“We should maybe be pushing it to see if we can increase the seating capacity a little bit,” he said.

Labour councillor Martin Repton said it was too late to change the capacity.

The velodrome, which can be used for racing, concerts and other events, is already under construction.

A SPECIALIST bike used by disabled youngsters in Derby is one of several police are appealing for help in finding.

The bike – a Velo Plus tricycle with a ramp on the front to accommodate a wheelchair – was stolen from a shed in Markeaton Park.

Several other bikes belonging to Cycle Derby were taken during the break-in, which happened overnight between January 29 and 30.

Some bikes were recovered from a property in Redshaw Street, Derby, but the Velo Plus and others – including two BMX Raptors and five Barracuda 700c bikes – are still outstanding.
