Sporting chance for students at new velodrome

THE construction of the city’s new £27.5 million multi-sports arena, including a velodrome, is providing valuable work experience for two Derby College students.

Joe David and Emily Cawdron, both aged 17, who are part of the college’s professional construction careers academy, will have four-week internships with construction company Bowmer and Kirkland.

The Career Academy UK has brought the college together with leading regional employers to provide extra support for selected students including site visits, lectures, industry mentors and internships.

£27m velodrome taking shape

HUGE cranes lifting the pieces of Derby’s new sports arena into place are now dominating the skyline of Pride Park.

The £27.5 million building will have a 250-metre cycling track, a 12-court sports hall, a gym, multi-function rooms, a spinning room and a café.

    The city’s velodrome in Derby is taking shape.

It is being constructed by Bowmer and Kirkland, which is set to hand control of the building over to Derby City Council in October 2014.

In recent weeks a huge piledriver has walloped concrete piles into the ground so it is stable enough for the arena to be built on.

 Now enormous cranes are lifting steel pieces that make up the core of the building into place.

A Bowmer and Kirkland spokeswoman said this work would now continue until the beginning of September.
